Why test for feline coronavirus

FCoV is common, especially where many cats live together, and most exposed cats never become sick. In some cats the virus mutates and causes FIP, a severe and often fatal disease. Knowing a cat's FCoV status is one useful piece of information when FIP is a concern.

Common questions

Does a positive result mean the cat has FIP?
No. A positive result shows exposure to feline coronavirus. Many exposed cats never develop FIP. Diagnosing FIP takes a veterinarian combining clinical signs, bloodwork and other tests. A negative result makes FIP less likely.

Is this the same virus as COVID-19?
No. Feline coronavirus is a different virus that affects cats.
